It is that time of year again, science fair season. If you are desperate for a sports experiment idea then consider bicycles science fair projects. These projects are great because you will usually just need a bike and a volunteer to complete the project. And, after all, bicycling is fun!

Below are five ideas that you can use to jump start your science project.

The first topic that you can work with when designing bicycles science fair projects is distance. In this experiment you will use measurements from your bicycle to determine how far your bike has traveled. To complete this project you will multiply the circumference of your bicycle tire by the number of revolutions the tires make. How accurate is this method of measuring distance?

The second topic that you can work with when designing bicycles science fair projects is energy. One of the most popular energy sports projects that you can develop using a bicycle is to create an electricity generator using the bicycle and your body as the energy source. This is a fun project, and if you hook it up to your television, it can be a great way to burn calories while you watch your favorite programs.

The third topic that you can work with when designing winning sports science fair ideas is proper bike posture. In this experiment you will examine how your body position impacts the effectiveness of your muscles. You can measure the effectiveness of your posture by making observations about how your body feels after riding 10 miles in one position. If your muscles hurt then chances are the posture you were using wasn't correct.

The fourth topic that you can work with when developing free easy science fair projects that utilize a bike is the physics of the bicycling. In these experiments you will look at how force, momentum, energy and velocity impact the efficiency of traveling by bike. In these experiments don't be afraid to think creatively. Use your imagination to come up with questions to be answered or strategies to be tested.

The final option that you have for your bike experiments is to look at how gears work. The experiments that you design can look just at the philosophy behind using different sized gears, to the most effective ways to shift gears while participating in a bicycle race. You can also look at developing gear shifting strategies for mountain bike rides and compare those to strategies for gear shifting for flat land bike rides.
