So how do you choose high school science fair topics that are interesting? Look at what you already spend your time doing. Do you listen to music? Do you watch movies or the stars? Do you like to walk in the woods, work with plants or animals? Science is in absolutely everything we do, so if you pick an activity that you like to do, you're sure to find a science topic in there.
Let's take a look at some science areas for high school science fair topics: Biology, Engineering, Human Science, Earth Science, Computer Science, or Chemistry. These are broad areas and have literally thousands of ideas inside of each, but it will help you go forward if you know which one of these areas excites you the most. Excitement is an important aspect of conducting experiments. You're not doing it for anyone else or just for a grade, rather you're doing it because you want to know something for yourself.
Knowing something is the next step in choosing a topic and going forward in your project. What is it you already know about the topic and what do you want to know? What you already know is called the hypothesis and is part of the scientific method of research that is required in all science fair projects. What you want to know will determine what experiments you conduct to get the answer. Do you think the saying "can't teach an old dog new tricks" is true? Test your theory!
Maybe you believe solar energy is the only way to go for the future. Or possibly you spend a lot of time playing video games and think you could create a better one--give it a shot. Test and experiment with your ideas and have fun learning the answers to your questions. The fun comes in by not choosing topics that are unusual but activities that you enjoy doing and exploring the science inside of those activities. The finished display will embody your excitement and project it to others.
Whatever you choose for your high school science fair topics, make sure that you take the time in both the choice and the experiments. Start early thinking about the project, choosing the topic and developing the ideas so that you don't have to rush. Choose your high school science fair project like you choose your high school girlfriend--because you really like it and it makes your heart beat fast. Follow this advice and you're on your way to a winning project in a topic chosen without eeny, meeny, miney or moe.
