If you are looking for a way to incorporate current events into your science lesson plans then you need to consider integrating energy and fuel efficiency science projects into your curriculum. These projects will allow you to make science relatable to students and it will provide a reason for why science is important. There are a lot of different energy topics that you can develop projects for including: renewable energy sources, alternative energy sources and energy efficiency.

Car fuel is not just something that gets us from point A to point B, but it is also the source of national wealth and international conflicts. However, the problems that we are having today with fuel supplies and international conflict with countries that control oil reserves are not new. They stretch back decades. This is an interesting point to bring up, because even though we've had the same problem for over 50 years, we have done little as a country to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.

If you are looking for a way to introduce the importance of the development of renewable energy sources or alternative energy sources, then you can open up a discussion about how much fossil fuels we use each day. For example, did you know that every 15 seconds the world consumes enough oil to fill an Olympic sized swimming pool? That is about 6,000 swimming pools a day, and about 70 percent of this oil is used for transportation.

The next topic that you can discuss is car fuel efficiency and modern technology. Right now, for example, we have the technology and capability to produce car engines that are able to run 100 miles on a single gallon of gasoline. However, we still think that 30 miles per gallon is "fuel efficient."

Using these discussion you can lead in to your energy and fuel efficiency science projects. Break up your students into small groups and assign each group a specific energy or fuel efficiency topic. They can research this topic using the Internet or resources that are available in your library. Then have each group develop a science project that explores their topic. Possible projects include:

  • The energy efficiency rate of solar power for heating a home;

  • How efficient the different types of biofuels are;

  • What engine modifications can be made to improve fuel efficiency in gas powered engine
  • Energy and Fuel Efficiency Science Projects, as well as alternative energy science fair projects, are great for linking science concepts to current events.
