Science Fair Project Ideas ~ Do more blades translated into more power output? Measure the output with the multimeter and compare a 2, 4, and 6 blade driven windmill. Then compare output when the windmill is hooked up to the solar panels.

~ Compare the windmill's energy output when used alone vs combining it with the solar panels.

Exampe hypothesis: The wind turbine with the thinner blades will have more energy power.

 

With the PicoTurbine Windmill Kit will build a fully functioning, electricity-producing scale model of a wind turbine.

PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2 is a fully functioning Savonius wind turbine. It stands 8" tall and produces between 2.0-3.0 volts which is enough to light up a bicolor LED (included). The LED flashes red and green to show the alternating current produced.

The kit can be easily built in less than one hour. With some adult supervision the kit can be built by children as young as 10 years old.

Included in the PicoTurbine Windmill Kit V2

  • 4 pre-wound coils of enamel coated copper wire

  • 4 ceramic grade-5 magnets

  • 1 (5 1/4”) disk

  • 1 bicolor light emitting diode (LED) with 2 leads

  • 1 (1/2”) Phillips head (cross slot) screw

  • 1 eye-hook screw

  • 1 wooden dowel

  • 1 piece of wood about 6” by 6” and ½” thick (for the base)

  • 1 strip of double-sided tape

  • 1 small piece of sandpaper for stripping the copper wire

This kit includes all parts that you will need:

  • 4 light emitting diode (LED) with 2 leads

  • 2 electrolytic capacitors

  • 1 piezo buzzer

  • A solderless breadboard and 8 jumper wires

  • Instructions booklet includes teacher's guide and technical notes. The guide shows you how to build 4 different circuits and test them.
  • Circuits explained include:

  • A simple half-wave rectifier,
  • A half-wave rectifier with smoothing capacitors,
  • A full wave "bridge" rectifier with and without smoothing, and
  • A voltage doubling rectifier.
  • Many adults who are considering home power systems will profit from the lessons taught by these simple experiments. Each experiment takes from 10 to 15 minutes to perform, a perfect length of time for classroom use.

    The Cen-Tech Multimeter measures your output of electricity and can be used with all the PicoTurbines Science Kits. It displays AC milli-volts, adds another dimension to your experiments, and helps to tune the alternator.

    You will get accurate readings for DC voltage, DC current, AC voltage, resistance, transistor test, diode test, and battery test. Easy-to-read 3-1/2 digit LCD readout, positive set selector switch, and 32" leads. • Automatic zero adjust • Overange indicator • 2.5x second sample time • Low battery indicator • Fuse and diode protected circuit.

     

     

     

     

    The 10 BioColor LEDs alternate between red and green depending on direction of current flow, making them an excellent accessory for alternating current. They can also be used to show the increase in outage of electricity.
