Food production is a challenge that humans have always struggled with. Today, one of the most important crops in the world is wheat. The importance of this crop as a food staple makes it a great topic for botany experiments. Below you will find five ideas for wheat science fair projects.

Can you cross wheat with rice? This hypothesis question will need wheat science fair projects that artificially cross a wheat plant with a rice plant. Is this cross even possible? Predict your results. If it is possible, what will the resulting offspring look like? What will it taste like?

Can you cross wheat with alfalfa? This hypothesis will also use wheat science fair projects to determine if the cross of these two plants is possible. What problems might you face when crossing these two plants? Could the hybrid plant turn out to be inedible? Could it produce toxins that the parent plants didn't produce?

Can you cross wheat with corn? Corn is another vital staple crop that the world depends on to survive. If corn was crossed with wheat and it produced an edible crop, how would it change agriculture? Do you think people would be eager to try whorn or cheat? What FDA hurdles would need to be death with before a wheat-corn cross commodity could be introduced to consumers?

Can you cross wheat with rye? This is one of the more logical crosses since both wheat and rye are cereal crops. However, they do not come from the same family of plants. In this experiment you will need to artificially use the pollen of one plant to pollinate the stamen of the other. You may want to try doing the cross both ways, pollinating the wheat with the rye and the rye with the wheat. If properly done, these projects can turn out to be1st place science experiments.

Can you cross wheat with barley? This is another logical cross. To create an advanced project you may try a variety of pollination or cross breeding techniques. For example, what would happen if you spliced a barley stalk to a wheat plant? Would this methodology work? Why or why not? What about botany embryology? Would this allow you to cross the plants more effectively?
