Amino acids science fair projects examine how amino acids create proteins or impact protein synthesis. These projects tend to be more advanced and are generally better suited for science students in high school, however, talented middle schoolers can also tackle these challenging biology science experiments. Below are some ideas for your science fair projects.

Amino acids can be polymerized to make artificial sweeteners. To test this hypothesis you will need to create amino acids science fair projects that create artificial sweeteners like aspartame. This is a very advanced project that will require a good understanding of chemistry and food science.

You can simulate the 3D folding of protein's structure using an algorithm modeled after amino acid formations. This is another very advanced option for amino acids science fair projects. To complete this project you will need to search your textbook and/or online resources to find the algorithm before you will be able to design your experiment. You will then want to design your experiment to answer a specific question or problem.

Amino acids can either be polar or non-polar. If you are interested in biochemistry science fair projects then this is a good topic for you. See if running a current through an amino acid will impact its polarity, or see if it will impact the bonds that it will make with other amino acids. Be careful when working with electricity.

You can synthesize proteins by combining amino acids artificially. This is another biochemistry project that is very advanced. However, if you can handle this type of challenge you may be able to really impress the judges at your science fair. The independent variable in this experiment will be the amino acids that you combine and the dependent variable will be the protein that you synthesize. The answer to this question is yes, but not always. Explain what this means.

Since these project ideas are all very advanced you will want to conduct a considerable amount of background research before tackling them. You will want to research the basics of amino acids as well as the basics for the topic or process that you have selected. If you live near a university with a biology or biochemistry department talk to a professor in that department and try to set up a tour of the department to see what equipment is used to experiment with amino acids. They may even allow you to use the university equipment to execute your project.
